The outer beam is 5 inches, when I order do I order 5 inches or select the next size up which is 5 1/2?

The dimensions you specify when ordering are the outer dimensions of the beam. The material is about 1 inch thick. The inner dimensions of a 3-sided beam are approximately 2 inches less than the specified outer width and 1 inch less than the specified outer height. Because these beams are hand fabricated please allow a tolerance when covering existing materials. So if you order a 5x5 beam the inner dimensions are 3x4.
