To finish an unfinished beam or mantel follow our instructions for How To Finish an Unfinished Beam. Be sure to use a high-quality water-based paint (oil/solvent based products will not dry) and also apply in very thin layers, allowing the paint to dry between coats (unlike natural wood you do not have the option to sand down and try again).
